Named after a Roman emperor who allegedly burned down the city of Rome, Nero started out from humble beginnings, but it did not take long until it became one of the most popular disc burning utilities on the market. Today, it incorporates a vast array of tools, which makes it a complete multimedia suite. You can use various Nero utilities to rip CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, create movie DVDs, manage, convert and stream media files, back up data and much more.

You can either purchase one or more of the aforementioned tools individually or buy Nero 12, which includes almost all utilities. It takes several minutes to download and install Nero 12. Its setup package weighs in at 311 MB and you will have to wait until the wizard installs and configures a series of tools, like MS VC Redist, various Direct 3D extensions and others.

Nero 12's utilities can be launched separately, with different executables, but you can also run them from a user interface. You can play a video on this interface, which highlights Nero's main capabilities. The installed utilities are listed on the right side of the interface. You can expand their entries to reveal short descriptions and Start buttons. Each tool presents a different interface, with different options and capabilities.

The Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express tools need no introduction. They are well known disc burners, which have been kept up to date with Blu-ray disc writing capabilities, as well as other useful features. Nero BackItUp can be configured to back up important data, synchronize folders or back up entire drives and store them on a local or network drive. You can set it to perform full, incremental or differential backups or to update backed up data. When it comes to synchronizing folders, the program can copy data in one or both directions, preform a partial synchronization or mirroring process and more. You can also schedule backup jobs or activate a live backup feature.

Nero Video includes several features, for capturing and recording camera or TV feeds, creating video montages or slide shows, creating video DVDs and more. When creating a video DVD, you can choose from a variety of menu templates. If you can't add a certain video to your project, due to an unsupported format, you can use the Nero Recode Utility to convert them.

Nero Kwik Media is another featured application. It can be used to organize music, videos and pictures, play Audio CDs and more. You can add your music to one or more playlists or share it via email or other means. Photos can be edited and you can use them to create photobooks, albums, slideshows, calendars or cards. Other tools include a modern and elegant Blu-ray player, with 3D capabilities, as well as a smart data recovery utility.

Pros

Nero 12 comes with a broad range of multimedia utilities. You can use them to burn or rip CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, back up data, recover lost files and more. The applications are listed on a user interface, which displays an introductory video, descriptions and other information.

Cons

The embedded photo editor is pretty basic. Besides that, most tools have restricted functions, until you buy the package. Nero's capabilities go beyond burning optical discs. It is a complete package, which can be used for any operation that involves media files.
